Specification for Designs with Bleed

If your graphics have colour or image that extends to the edge of your design, you need to add a bleed. When you have a bleed, the design size needs to be at least 0.25" bigger than the actual print size and make sure your text is far from the edge to allow room for cutting.

The following is a brief design guideline using a standard business card as an example.

Assuming this is the desired finished product, sized 3.5" x 2".

finished product

Since the background pattern extends to the edge, the design should be sized at 3.75" x 2.25", similar to this:

The dotted line shows where cutting/trimming will take place. Only the area enclosed will be part of the final product. Aside from making sure the background extends 0.25" further from the edge, you may also want to make sure that your main text and graphics are at least 0.25" from the dotted line to compensate for possible misalignment.

In order to produce the desired final product, your design should NOT look like this:

a design that will not produce the desired product

Although it is sized to 3.75" x 2.25", it will not look like your desired final print because only the area within the dotted line will remain.

The same rules apply to all other designs including postcards, flyers, brochures, door hangers, etc. Please follow these guidelines carefully so that we can produce the prints to your best satisfaction.

*Note: Please do NOT include the dotted line or crop marks in your design.
